#25 Peer Gynt

Theatre ( Storytelling, Physical Theatre ) Zoo, Sanctuary

A fine production of classic Norwegian saga play from Gruffdog Theatre. Ensemble drama with spectacle puppetry and live music for effect. A little thin on emotion and emphasis, with competent acting. Humourless, bleak play. I couldn't quite connect with the characters.

Interesting take on representing the passage of time, but it didn't really add clarity or effect. Great, ingenious cinematic visuals on occasion. A serious play, suffers from a sluggish pace. Good use of minimalist set, and medium size stage.

Familiar Grieg motifs employed, score otherwise forgettable. Towards the end, a restless crowd in the pews of the old chapel.

See it for the sensational scene with the king of the mountain.
